A so-called workation – also called working holiday – is gaining popularity among freelancers and people who work 100% from home. Working in a different atmosphere offers many advantages for your work-life balance – as long as you keep a few things in mind. In this article, you’ll learn what really matters and how to plan your workation as a talent at yoummday.

What is a workation?

The term “workation” is a combination of the words “work” and “vacation” and basically means nothing other than: For a while, you move your home office to a place you would normally spend your vacation at. Generally, this could be anywhere: Visiting your family in your hometown,a cottage on the beach, a cabin in the mountains or an apartment in a foreign city. What we long for or where we prefer to spend time is of course very subjective. The only importance is that youraccommodation offers a suitable workplace and a stable internet connection. The basic idea of a workation is that we spend our working day as normal, but bring in some variety through the new environment and be able to relax or gain new experiences in our free time.

But beware: A workation is not a substitute for a vacation

Spending time in a nice environment and earning money on top of it? That sounds too good to be true, don’t you think? But this is exactly the biggest challenge of the workation concept! In fact, some of us tend to take a workation instead of a real vacation. But as relaxing and inspiring as a workation can be – it’s not a substitute for real free time. After all, we all need regular downtime to really recover from work. You should always remember: A workation is a great addition to your daily work routine – but you should still take enough time off.
