As a self-employed customer service agent, you frequently spend a lot of time in front of a computer screen. It is therefore important that you take care of your eyes and give them conscious breaks during your working hours. Who does not know it: After a few hours in front of a computer, the eyes slowly become dry and start to itch or even burn. The reason: they are not sufficiently moistened. This is because we automatically blink less while working at a computer. As a result, the tear fluid that our body produces is no longer evenly distributed on the surface of the eye. With these practical hints for everyday use, you can relieve the strain on your eyes during work and supply them with sufficient fluid.

1. 20-20-20 Method

How it works: This rule comes from the English-speaking world since 20-20-20 stands for: 20 minutes, 20 seconds, 20 feet. This means that after 20 minutes of screen time you should look at a target 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Ideal for this is, for instance, looking out of the window or at the other end of your office. In the beginning it is best to set a timer to get a feeling for when 20 minutes are over.

The goal: By consciously and regularly shifting your focus from near to far, you keep your eyes moving and offer them short and effective breaks from staring at the screen. This provides them with sustainable relief. In addition, you automatically blink more as soon as you avert your gaze from the screen, which ensures that your eyes are always sufficiently moistened in between.

2. Close Your Eyes

How it works: Use work phases in which you do not have to read or actively look up anything to close your eyes briefly in between - for example during a conversation with a customer when your customer is describing his or her concerns. A positive side effect: with your eyes closed, you are less easily distracted and can concentrate even better on what is being said!

The goal: By regularly giving your eyes a short break, you give them the opportunity to regenerate and "recharge". Just a few seconds are mostly enough to make your eyes fresh, clear and ready for action again!

3. Active blink

How it works: Make sure to blink actively and regularly, when working in front of the computer. At first, this may seem strange. After all, blinking is an automatic process that we usually give little thought to. However, the blink rate of our eyelids is reduced from 20 to 5 blinks per minute during screen work. Therefore, it is helpful to consciously and actively counteract this automatic physical slowdown!

The goal: Almost all eye complaints that occur during working hours are related to the fact that regular hydration is interrupted. Active blinking is the simplest and most effective way to prevent this!
